Cold, Wet Weather At Courtenay Show On Saturday

Overcast skies and cold winds persisted throughout the annual show of the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association at Kirwee on Saturday. During the morning there was a brief but heavy fall of hail which sent show patrons scurrying for cover. However, after a few minutes the hail turned to rain, which continued to fall intermittently throughout the day with lengthening fair periods.

This year there were record entries for the show —2965. There were 53 entries in the dog sections (49 last year), 394 in the sheep sections (291), 165 in the cattle sections (135), and 1155 in the horse section (976). The horse and sheep entries were thought to be records for the show.

The large horse section entry is believed to have made the Courtenay show the biggest one-day horse show in New Zealand.

Gate takings on Saturday amounted to £lB4 4s. Last year takings were £lB3, and the previous year £223. Sheep

The size of the flock sheep entry was very gratifying, particularly in the hogget classes, said the judge (Mr H. C. Abbott). The quality over all was very good, but some of the good sheep lost their position because of faulty feet. Entrants could pay more attention to this feature.

The winning sheep were good enough to do well in other country shows and were ■well up to standard. The Young Farmers’ Club classes were weak. Paparua Prison Farm was to be commended on its support of the section, and indeed its support at most country shows. The Corriedale judge (Mr J. D. Sidey) said the size of the entry was very good for a country show, and the standard was average to good. The quality in the shorn ewe classes was the best, although there were no really outstanding sheep. The judge of the South Suffolk, Poll Dorset and Dorset Horn sections (Mr J. E. Gardiner). said the size of entries was generally poor. In the South Suffolk classes breeders should pay more attention to colour. The top sheep would compare favourably with those in other country shows. Entries in the Southdown section were quite good, particularly the ram hoggets, said the Southdown judge (Mr W. E. Moorhead). The ram hoggets were of very good quality and the top sheep were good specimens.

Speaking of the South Dorset Down section, the judge (Mr H. M. King) commented particularly on the good entry in the two new classes for younger sheep. The quality in and the top sheep were good he said.

The ram and ewe hogget sections included some good entries with some very good types of sheep.

It was a pleasure to judge the Hampshire Down section, said the judge of the Dorset Down and Hampshire Downs (Mr S. Kelynack). The entry was of good size and there were some very good sheep. “There was not a sheep in the Hampshire Down class I would not be proud to own,” he said. The sheep were in excellent order, and competition was very strong.

The Border and English Leicester judge (Mr D. R. Copland) said the size of the entry was good for a country show and there were some good sheep entered. Some, in fact, had done well in the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastorial Association’s show. The ram and ewe hogget classes w’ere the best classes. Bigger Entries

Entries in the fat sheep classes were bigger than last year and the quality was very good and very even, said the judge (Mr R. F. Edbrooke). The over-all quality was well up to that at other shows, and the sheep showed that the season in the area had been good. The judge of the Red Poll section (Mr E. Arnott Anderson) said there was a very nice representative entry of many truly dual-character cattle. The condition of the animals compared very well with previous years, and there was definite conformity’ of type.

In a few Instances there was a break in the truly dual character of the breed, and ft was important this should be maintained. In these cases the beef and milk aspects were not as well balanced as could be hoped. The judge of the Jersey section (Mr R. J. M. Millar) said there was a very good entry for an area in which no dairying was done and the competitors had to come from a distance. The top animals were very good and would compare favourably in any show in the South Island. The judge of the saddle cobs and harness horses (Mr A. F. Cunningham) said the size of the entry was verygood and the standard was high. The horses were well turned out and the prize-win-ners would gain awards at any show.

The judge of the small pony and riding classes (Mr J. J. Wyllie) said the overall standard was excellent. Kirwee was renowned for its riding as it was the centre of Canterbury pony breeding. The two champion ponies were really good and Catherine Mahoney's Debonaire, the champion over 12 hands, had not put a foot wrong all day CHAMPIONSHIPS Results of championships were:
