VIENNA, Nov. 21.
Rumania is willing to mediate between the United States and North Vietnam to end the Vietnam war.
Officials accompanying the Rumanian Prime Minister, Mr lon Gherorghe Maurer, on his official visit to Austria disclosed this today. Secret exploratory talks between the United States Ambassador to Rumania, Mr William Crawford, and the Rumanian Foreign Minister, Mr Corneliu Manescu, had taken place in Bucharest last June, they said. Senator M. Mansfield, Democratic majority leader in the United States Senate, arrived in Bucharrest yesterday on his tour
of Europe and Asia with four other senators. The secrecy surrounding the tour of the senators has led to speculation they may have been sent by President Johnson to sound out possibilities of settlement of the Vietnam conflict.
A high Rumanian official confirmed in Vienna today that the visit of Senator Mansfield to Bucharest was “obviously aimed at exploring the chances of bringing about peace talks on Vietnam.” The Prime Minister is absent from the Rumanian capital, but Bucharest Radio reported today that Senator Mansfield had talks with the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Gheorghe Apostol, and the Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr Gheorghe Macovei.
