November 22 PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.—The twentyfourth session of the Provincial Council was opened yesterday afternoon. The Council met in the new Chamber (a full description of which will be found elsewhere); there was a full attendance of spectators, the Strangers’ gallery being well filled, and the Speakers’ gallery and other parts of the House set apart for the accommodation of lady visitors, having also their full share of occupants. The members present were—Mr Speaker, Messrs. Aynsley, J. Beswick, Birch, Buckley, Clark, Cowlishaw, Dixon, Duncan, Hall Hayhurst, Hawkes, Hornbrook, Jollie, Macpherson, Moorhouse,
Maude, Peacock, Rowe, Shand, Stewart, Stoddart, Tancred, Templer, Wilkin, Williams, J. C. Wilson, and W. Wilson. . . .
His Honor the Superintendent then entered the House, followed by the Executive, and opened the session by reading the following address:— Mr. Speaker and Gentlemen of the Provincial Council—“l have to congratulate you on meeting in a building in every way worthy of the purpose to which it has been devoted, and which will, I trust, be found not only to afford suitable accommodation for the transaction of business, but will also be an object of ornament to this city, and a credit to Canterbury for the future.”
