SWALLOWS IN N.Z.
Nest At Lake Ellesmere
A small colony of Australian Welcome swallows is nesting on the fishing launch of Mr J. Bowis, at the mouth of the Irwell river on Lake Ellesmere. In North Auckland a recently-established colony is nesting under bridges. Ornithologists are keeping careful watch for scientific interest in the peculiar nesting habits and also because they hope the swallows may increase.
“We appeal to the public not to disturb the swallows so that one day we may have them all over New Zealand,” said Dr. R. S. Duff, Director of the Canterbury Museum.
