Bishop Dedicates Reredos
A reredos, processional cross and altar book were dedicated in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Kaiapoi, yesterday by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Right Rev. A. K. Warren).
The oak reredos, showing the Good Shepherd, was
carved by Dean Carrington, dean of the Christchurch Cathedral from 1913 to 1927. It was originally placed in the chapel of College House, now Christchurch College, but was removed and stored when the chapel was altered. When it was offered to the
clergy by the Bishop, the Rev. P. N. Wright immediately accepted the reredos, which was later cleaned and the dark stain removed. The processional cross, given by a former parishioner, Mrs A. Tourell, features Maori carving with inlaid paua shell, executed by Mr M. Taumaunu. The altar book was given by Mr and Mrs J. Parker about three years ago.
The evensong and dedication service at 3 p.m. wenconducted by Mr Wright. The Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr H O. Hills) and members of the Kaiapoi Borough Council attended.
