Galleries Refuse To Remove Painting

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 16.

A test case could develop if the police press charges over a painting by the recentlyappointed Frances Hodgkins fellow, Michael Illingworth, after a complaint that it was obscene.

Entitled “Adam and Eve,” the oil was part of an exhibition that concluded in the Barry Lett galleries on Friday.

Last week, the police requested that the painting be removed from the exhibition The gallery directors refused and it stayed until the exhibition concluded. When the directors of the galleries refused to take the painting down, the police took photographs of the painting to send to the Attorney-General. Whether there will be a prosecution will be decided by the Attorney-General. An Auckland lawyer, Mr R. Maclaren who was consulted by the galleries, said today that any prosecution

’ would be stoutly defended. It . would be treated as a test s case.
