Prince D’Amour Big Ellerslie Attraction

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. The presence of Prince D’Amour, an Awapuni two-year-old, in the Welcome Stakes, is bringing widespread attention to the Auckland Racing Club’s mid-spring meeting at Ellerslie today. Prince D’Amour will be trying for his fourth win on end. He has yet to race righthanded, the Ellerslie way round, but a weight of T.A.B. bets seem certain to make him a warm favourite. The Alison Cup, of £2500, 11 furlongs, the Cheltenham Handicap, of six furlongs, and the Ponui Handicap, a mile, are other events which should make the racing full of interest. The Alison Cup, packed with good middle-distance horses, looks very open and so does the Cheltenham Handicap. The Alison Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double and the Cheltenham Handicap will be the second leg. Aro, Red Count, Goid Chick, Damian's Pride, Golden Defoe and Kamikaze look likely to dispute the finish of the Alison Cup. If Impresario improved with his last race, as he almost certainly did, he might be the hardest to beat in the Cheltenham Handicap. Impresario is the top weight with 9-4 and a fine sprinter when at peak form. His last race was over seven furlongs at Te Rapa on October 25. The Cheltenham Handicap will be his second after a spell. After mid-week rain the weather cleared and the track yesterday was in excellent order. If the fine spell continues the going will be fast.
