ICHTAR NEAR TOP FORM

“The Press’’ Special Service WELLINGTON.

Ichtar, which was in brilliant form over a mile and nine furlongs at Riccarton this time last year, might have his first win since then in the Napier Handicap at Hastings today.

Since his winning streak at Riccarton a year ago Ichtar has undergone two wind operations and Ms connexions have had to exercise a good deal of patience in waiting for him to regain form.

That patience could be rewarded today, for Ichtar looked unlucky on Wednesday, when he ran fourth. He has nine opponents, and though some, such as Shady and Israel, are racing well, none would match Mm if he could regain Ms best form of last year. On Wednesday Idhtar still had only two or three behind Mm near the straight, and he fimshed powerfully through the field.

Israel outfinis-hed Shady narrowly for first on Wednesday. Jt will be interesting to see them meet again with three pounds between them Instead of near seven.

General Derby won so easily on the first day that it is hard to see him being beaten over an extra furlong in the Stewards' Handicap, which completes the T.A.B. double.

The brilliant mare, Starlit, should be considerably improved by her race on Wednesday and she will probably be better suited by seven furlongs. High Disdain was beaten by Sir Juvante, also a sprint candidate, on Thursday morning, but High Disdain usually races gamely when he is fresii and he has not started this season. The track was cut about on Wednesday, but only on the surface and it should still be fast.
