COURT BELLE TOP FANCY FOR N.Z. CUP TODAY

Trial Offer Stewards’ Handicap Favourite

Trial Offer, Terrific and Rag Doll could be major winners for North Island stables at Riccarton today.

But hopes are high that the winner’s share of the £5300 stake for the New Zealand Cup will remain in the south.

Court Belle, from Gore, Eiffel Tower, from Riverton, and the Riccarton-trained topweight, Royal Bid, are all mentioned among the top fancies for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s rich two-miler.

Court Belle, which is “The Press” pick, seems to be fairly well favoured all-round. It is likely that she will be the popular fancy. Court Belle has not galloped since she arrived at Riccarton—her training tasks on Thursday and yesterday were three solid rounds of pacework on the sand. R. J. Cochrane, who prepares Court Belle for her Gore breeder, Mr H. G. Wallis, has the mare looking ready to run the race of her life. Hopes are high in the camp of W. J. Hillis that Eiffel Tower will run a great race in the colours of his Invercargill breeder, Mr W. E. Hazlett. If Royal Bid succeeds—and his Riccarton trainer, V. D. Clutterbuck, thinks that he will—it will still be a great day for Southland. Although locally-trained, Royal Bid carries the colours of his breeder, Mr L. B. McKenzie, of Thornbury. But the South Island fancies will have to run right up to their peak form to cope with several well-performed North Island stayers. Alaska, last year’s New Zealand Cup winner, is bound to have solid backing. He has come through a sound preparation to the satisfaction of his Awapuni trainer, M. B. Andrews. Fleeting Moment, from Woodville, Carnmor, from Trentham, and Midnight Kiss, from Matamata, are all expected by their trainers to be major contenders. The New Zealand Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg of this double will be the Stewards’ Handicap in which Trial Offer will probably dominate betting. Terrific is “The Press” pick for the New Zealand Derby, which has attracted a representative field of the Dominion’s top staying three-year-olds.

Rag Doll, a Bourbon Prince filly prepared at Hastings by her owner, Miss H. D. Symes, will be the popular fancy for the Welcome Stakes, another major attraction today. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Waimairi High-weight and the Spring Plate. Hunting Horn and Surgaway might be the successful combination. Fields, with riders, and form comments appear below. FIRST LEG ON-COURSE DOUBLE 11.30 a m.—
