Couple Gaoled For Infant Son’s Death

(New Zealand Press Association)

GISBORNE, Nov. 5.

A married couple were sentenced to gaol by Mr Justice Moller today for the “very gruesome” killing of their five-month-old son.

His Honour said people could not kill children by neglect and starvation and then say "I’m sorry. Be kind to me.”

He was sentencing Suda Bay Marino, aged 24, a storeman, to two years’ imprisonment and his wife, Ribipeti Tataurani Marino, aged 22, to one year. Both had earltier been convicted of manslaughter. His Honour said Marino had shown irresponsibility and his actions on the weekend the children were taken away could be regarded as an indication of what had happened on other week-ends. His Honour sentenced Ngarangi Haenga, aged 35, a roller driver, to 18 months’ gaol for manslaughter of his three-year-old son. He said Haenga was a person of very high standards in his home and other relationships but "I have to remem-

her that a child has died and you are the cause of it. “Over the last two or three years this type of offence has become appallingly common and something must be done to stop it,” he said.
