‘Hey, Look This Way Princess’

Princess Margaret last night fulfilled a dream she has had “for ages” when she began her first visit to the United States, United Press International reported. The Princess told • gathering of 500 in her first formal appearance, “I am so thrilled.” The 35-yeax-old Princess first expressed a desire to visit America when she was 18, but advisers to King George VI believed the trip would cause too great a security problem. Princess Margaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon, flew from London to San Francisco with a 90-miinute stop in New York. The cable photograph shows the Royal couple at New York’s Kennedy airport. They will remain in California for a week of their 20day visit to the United States. After a hectic press conference at the airport, where a smiling Princess obliged the cries of press photographers, "Hey, look this way, Princess.” the Royal couple attended a reception at the San Francisco Press Club. As the Princess entered, Mr G. McGravan, co-chairman of the host committee, told waiting reporters: “Let’s give the little lady a big hand.” They broke into applause, the Associated Press said. The Princess said she hoped "to meet many people of all walks of life.”

She was presented with a statue of a black cat, the press club's traditional gift to visiting dignitaries, N.Z.P.A.Reuter reported. Meanwhile, Princess Margaret’s official hostess in San Francisco, Sharman Douglas, is reported to have made enemies left, right and centre—amongst those uninvited to the various Royal occasions. California society, from the Nob Hill set in San Francisco to the Beverley Hills elite, is agog and frantic to meet the Princess and Lord Snowdon.
