METHYLATED SPIRITS

Natives Drink 5400 Gallons (N.Z. Pres» Attn.— i Copyright) RABAUL (New Britain), Nov. 5. Natives were drinking more than 130 gallons of methylated spirits in the town of Rabaul every week, an Administration official said last night. The Acting District Commissioner (Mr W. Kelly) said that up to October 5 about 9000 gallons of methylated spirits had been imported to Rabaul this year. He told the Rabaul Advisory Council that pol:-e estimated that 60 per cent of this amount had been drunk by natives. Rabaul police have been cracking down in recent weeks on irregularities in methylated spirit sales. The Administration also is seeking methods for a campaign to prevent it being drunk.
