Macapagal Hopes For Second Term
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) MANILA, Nov. 5. President Diosdado Macapagal will attempt next Tuesday to become the only men ever elected twice to the Philippine Presidency.
His main opponent in the P -esidential election will be Ferdinand E. Marcos, the most decorated Filipino soldier of World War 11. President, Macapagal, aged
55, a doctor of law and philosophy, is the Liberal Party nominee. Mr Marcos, aged 48, the boyish-looking President of the Senate, is the Nacionlista Party candidate. / A third candidate is Senator Raul Manglapus, who is heading the newly-formed Party for Philippine Progress. There is fear in many quarters of possible violence at the polls. Scores have been killed in past elections. The election is expected to be a close decision between Mr Marcos and Mr Macapagal. Each has predicted a sweeping victory for himself. No change in the Philippines pro-Western policy is expected regardless of the outcome.
