The report said Asia was still by far the most populous continent with 1783 million people. Europe followed with 440 million. Africa had 304 million people, North America 286

million, the Soviet Union almost 228 million, South America 162 million and Oceania 17,100,000. China’s population was estimated at 686,000,000.

Indonesia was the third most populous nation in Asia, with 102,200,000 people, although Pakistan was close behind with 100,762,000. Nigeria had 56,400,000 people, the most in any African country. In South America, Brazil led with 78,809,000. In Europe, West Germany was populated by 56,097,000 people, Britain by 54,066,000, Italy by 50,955,000 and France by 48,417,000.
