Gastro-enteritis

Sir, —It appears that gastroenteritis is prevalent. As this complaint lasts for weeks —even months—with nausea and general discomfort, could you please give some publicity as to how we could avoid it? Will gargling and nasal sprays help? What treatment will effect recovery speedily? —Yours, etc., G.J.M. October 26, 1965. [The Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) replies: “Diarrhoea has many different causes. At the present time some dysentery is common amongst children and is spread from person to person through transfer of organisms from the bowel. Prevention depends on personal hygiene—most particularly, scrupulous attention to washing of hands after using the toilet as a precaution in dysentery. Treatment depends on the sensitivity to anti-biotics of the organism responsible, but nasal sprays or gargling would certainly be ineffective.”]
