Canterbury Successes At Royal Show

Light rain at the opening of the 35th Royal Show at Palmerston North today did not dampen the enthusiasm of Canterbury exhibitors, who had major successes in the Jersey cattle, and Romney and Southdown sheep sections. The rain later cleared and the. rest of the day was cool and; overcast. One of the most notable! successes in the dairy cattle | section was by R. W. Frost! and Son, Rangiora, whose 1 Pine Leigh Primrose, a seven-; year-old cow, won the Jersey; cow championship after win- 1 ning the special 1000-gallonl type and productions classi against strong competition 1 and the aged cow class in a; field of 37 entries. Pine Leigh Primrose has a! proud record. At six years; she produced 10,6201 b milk, 5391 b fat in 305 days. She wasl the champion Jersey at the; Christchurch show last year,, champion at Rangiora and Amberley and champion at all three world conference shows! in February at Hamilton, Pal-; merston North and Rangiora. Romney Marsh ewe. F. W. Jarman scored early successes in the Southdown section, another main section of the show. He won the open reserve ram championship with his winning ram over 30 months, was second with his open four-tooth ram and won the open two-tooth and ram hogget classes. He also won the open ewe championship with his aged ewe, and won the open four-tooth ewe class. His open champion ewe later went on to be declared the supreme open champion. Mrs J. M. Jarman, of Darfield, won both Suffolk championships against strong North Island competition.

J. D. Galpin, Ltd., of Southbridge, won the South Suffolk section with its winning fourtooth ewe. It also had the Dorset horn champion ewe and the reserve champion ram and the champion and reserve polled Dorset ewes. W. L. Walsh, of Blenheim, had the champion polled Dorset ram.

The estate of James Reid, Ltd. of the Riversleigh stud, Darfield, won both .English Leicester championships, the reserve champion Corriedale ewe award and several other Corriedale placings. The Corriedale championships for ram and ewe and the reserve ram award were won by the D. S. Johns Trust, of Culverden, which also had four firsts and s second The Dorset Down ewe championship and reserve award were won by the Darenal Estate, of Waipara, which won the aged ewe, two-tooth ewe, ewe hogget and ram hogget classes. J. G. Gunn, of Darfield, won both the champion and reserve champion Border Leicester ewe awards with oneshear and aged ewes, and won the reserve ram championship with a one-shear ram entry. R. J Low and Son, of Methven, won the single ram hogget class, and I. G. Gunn won the single ewe hogget class. G. E. Gumbrell, of Geraldine, took first and second in both the Reylands champion ewe and lamb sections.
