15-MILE CHASE

Bing Wins Stage (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. A thrilling; 15-mile chase to catch the bunch after his cycle suffered a puncture brought G. Bing, of Wanganui, victory over the last few yards to win the Otorohanga to New Plymouth fifth stage of the Dulux six-day cycle race yesterday. Bing flashed across the line ahead of a bunch of 18. with only a wheel separating him from K. Manning, of Palmerston North. Both Manning and Bing had had punctures on the descent of Mount Messenger, about 26 miles from New Plymouth Bing had trouble getting a new tyre and at Urenui was IJmin behind. Last year’s fifth stage winner, M. Powell, of Australia, was third.

Later, Bing and Manning were both penalised one min ute for following in the wake of a car. If he had not been penalised Bing would be leading the tour from Powell by one second. But he is now in tenth place.

Powell is first, with 15hr 51min 19sec, followed by Manning, 15:51:21; J. Danielson (Papanui), 15:51:28; and D. R. Thomson, 15:51:28. Results:—
