SEA CADET DINGHY LAUNCHED
A new 17ft sailing dinghy for the use of the T.S. Steadfast unit of the Canterbury Navy League’s Sea Cadet Corps was launched at Cass Bay yesterday afternoon.
The dinghy, which was built by apprentices of the Devonport Naval B se, was blessed by the Rev. J. A. Witbrock, the Vicar of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Lyttelton, before it was launched. Similar craft are to be built for other sea cadet units. Over 200 persons watched the launching, which was preceded by exhibitions of boat sailing and pulling, rigging, cross-coun-try running and a tug-of-war.
Fifty sea cadets paraded at the launching and later the dinghy’s crew sailed her in Cass Bay. In welcoming visitors and parents to the launching, the commanding officer of the unit, Lieutenant-Com-mander J. M. Norrie, said how pleased he was to have the dinghy and to see so many parents present to watch what their boys could do in the corps.
Among others present were the resident naval officer, H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus (Lieutenant Commander C. J. Carl), the commanding officer. H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus (Commander R. F. Sanderson), and the chairman of the Canterbury Navy League executive (Mr J. P. Shelley).
The picture shows the dinghy being blessed by Mr Witbrock.
