Marangai Wreckage Discovered
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. October 29. Equipment from the missing Bluff crayfish boat Marangai has been washed up on Seal Island, just inside the entrance to Dusky Sound. The crew of another Bluff
boat, Miss Southland, today found three oars, a hatch cover, a locker board, some rope, a drum of fuel and a pumpkin on the beach on the eastern side of Seal Island opposite the bigger Anchor Island. A former member of the crew of the Marangai said that the hatch cover found was the same size as the covers on the missing boat
and the rope was the type she carried. Messrs Len and Stewart Tipene were known to have had pumpkins on board the Marangai when they left Bluff. The Marangai was last seen nine days ago, not far from the spot where the articles were found washed up today. After the discovery of the oars and other articles today
the skipper of the Miss Southland, Mr G. B. Roderique, was preparing to make a landing to search ashore for any other clues to the Marangai’s fate and to look for any sign of the crew. More widespread searching of the area will depend on what they locate. Air searches for the Marangai were called off last night. Three aircraft—two Devons and a Sunderland—had covered the coastline and out to sea throughout the day without success. They had covered the Fiordland coast, including sounds and inlets, froi. Milford to Bluff and a wide area around Stewart Island. A number of Bluff fishing boats had also taken part in the search.
