HAAST ROAD
A.A.C. Work On Signs The final signposting of the as yet unopened section of the Haast Pass road had been receiving attention, as had been the raising of the standard of existing signs in South Westland and between the summit of the Haast Pass and Haast, said the report of the general manager (Mr E. S. Palliser) to a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). It was the first meeting of the new council under the new president (Mr T. W. Milliken). The report said that the resident officers at Greymouth and the Fox Glacier would be on patrol during the week-end on which the road would be opened. A Christchurch officer would patrol from the summit of the Haast Pass to Haast and would return to Christchurch by way of Arthur’s Pass. It was expected that a radio sub-base would be in use at the Fox Glacier before November 6. The report also said that as a subscription increase had been approved, the scale of garage breakdown service refunds should be increased from the same date. Recommendations would be placed before the incoming committee. The roads and patrols report for September said officers had travelled 14.668 miles, assisted 110 cars, shipped 23 cars, and erected 87 signs. The four technical officers made 310 vehicle inspections and five partial inspections.
