CARGO DELIVERY DELAYED

Railway Waggons Build-up A serious build-up of more than 1100 waggons of inward cargo had occurred because of an increase of shipping at Lyttelton recently. A staff shortage at the railway goods sheds, the district railway traffic manager (Mr M. R. Leineweber) said on Thursday. “It will take some days to clear the situation,” Mr Leineweber said. “At the moment we just don’t have the waggons to cope with the shipping at Lyttelton. The reluctance of shipping interests to use Cashin quay wharf and transit sheds has aggravated the problem,” he said. E goods shed would remain open between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday in an effort to relieve the position. The Waltham yard would be open on Saturday morning for deliveries of bulk goods. “I hope importers and carriers will make an extra effort to clear their goods," Mr Leineweber said.
