ORDERS FOR IMPORTS

22 p.c. Rise In September The value of overseas orders placed by surveyed firms in September, 1965, was 22 per cent higher than orders placed in September, 1964, says the Government Statistician. The results of this restricted survey covering about half of private imports—show that orders in September, 1965, were valued at £17.6m compared with £14.4m in September, 1964. Orders placed overseas by surveyed firms during the six months ended Sepetmber, 1965, totalled £97.8m —11 per cent higher than the £87.9m which was the value of orders for the six months ended September, 1964. Orders placed for the three months ended September, 1965, were 14 per cent higher than in the equivalent period of 1964. Payments Payments made by surveyed firms in the six months ended September, 1965, amounted to £79.9m, compared with the £78.4m in the corresponding period a year earlier. This represents an increase of 2 per cent. If for each group of firms the lag between orders and payments is the same as for earlier years, and if surveyed firms cover the same proportion of orders and payments, then this survey indicates that private import payments will average £28.6m a month from October to December, 1965, and £25.2m a month from January to March, 1966. Corresponding averages a year earlier were £25.7m and £22.7m respectively.
