Device To Prevent Landing Mishaps
(N Z. PA.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 29. Accidents like the Vanguard crash at London Airport, in which .36 people died, would be almost impossible with a new automatic landing device British European Airways were introducing, the airline's chairman, Mr Anthony Milward, said today.
The device, called Autoland and costing £50,000, would be fitted to all Trident airliners in the B.E.A. fleet as soon as possible. Two-thirds of the existing Trident fleet were equipped with the device, he said “but
there is still a long way to go.” He said it was “nonsense” to suggest that the crew of the crashed plane were under any strain. Detailed rules were written on this. Compensation for the relatives of the victims was £3OOO each by regulations, but B.E.A. would not stick to the letter of the law in paying only that sum, said Mr Milward.
