HAAST PASS ROAD
Restriction On Caravans
The secretary of the National Roads Board (Mr C. N. Johnson) has issued a reminder of the special by-law prohibiting the movement of caravans on the Haast road on opening day, November 6. The by-law "forbids any person to tow or cause or permit to be towed any caravan on that section of No. 6 State highway (Blenheim-Invercar-gill via Nelson and Greymouth) between Hart Hari and the Neck, Hawea, on November 6, 1965." Any person who commits an offence against this by-law is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £25. Mr Johnson said the main reason for banning caravan movement was to ensure the safe flow of traffic. Some sections of the road at the moment were narrow and steeply graded. Light cars towing caravans could run into difficulties, especially on the section between Hawea and the Gates of Haast. “However there was nothing to prevent caravanners from getting into position for the ceremony the day before the opening,” Mr Johnson said.
