Third Stage Of Ham Design Discussed

The design report for the third stage of the University of Canterbury at Ham is expected by the end of the year. Yesterday, in committee, the University Council discussed the location and nature of future buildings with an extensive model lay-out showing existing buildings, those under construction, those planned in the third stage (arts, library, and general), and late development, including the school of forestry and other planned extensions.

In open meeting, the ViceChancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) said the projected buildings in the model so far had no basis in reality but the council would be impressed with the number of buildings still to come.

The model took no account of the enormous landscaping programme already started which would be greatly accelerated as various buildings were completed, Dr. Pownall said. On the new scenic road through the property debris was being removed from the Clyde road end and kerbing was starting at the Ham road end.

It was hoped to grass the north bank of the Avon next season and on both sides the “theme” of the “Ham” homestead block would be continued with extensive plantings of azaleas and rhododendrons.

Dr. Pownall said some members of the public did not realise how careful the university was in its landscaping. There was a standing rule that nothing be removed without the written approval of the Vice-Chancellor and there had now been added a rule that all such matters also be referred to the senior landscape officer of the Ministry of Works.
