Deerstalkers Found Safe

BLENHEIM, Oct. 26.

The missing deerstalker, Robert Cairns, walked out of the bush at the Blue Mountain homestead of Buick Brothers shortly after 2 p.m. today about 24 hours after he was last seen on a deerstalking expedition and about 10 miles from the point where his two companions lost track of him.

Mr Cairns, aged 37, of New Brighton, Christchurch, was uninjured, except for a liglit bump on the head.

He came out of the bush in the opposite direction to that expected. With his companions he went into Ben More from Kekerengu, but. instead of returning the same way, he came out at Blue mountain, several miles to the north. Mr Cairns was reported missing after his two companions lost sight of him on Sunday on a ridge near rugged Ben More, a 4000 ft peak about six miles north of Kekerengu He was seen climbing the ridge about 4 p.m. on Sunday and when there was no sign of him yesterday morning his companions sounded the alarm.

The Blenheim police said this afternoon that Mr Cairns would be collected from the isolated Blue Mountain station and brought to Blenheim along with members of the search party. Deerstalkers’ Association today ended a 36-hour search for another hunter lost in the Ureweras when they found him walking down a stream bed.

The lost man .a Waipukurau spraying contractor, Mr Brian Fogarty, aged 43. was fit and well when he was found by one of half a dozen search teams formed by 23 men who were shooting in the locality. Mr Fogarty went into the bush with four companions at the Marauiti hut. near Waikaremoana, early on Sunday morning. He was due back at the hut at noon.

Traces of an overnight fire were found by a search team this morning, and shortly after 9 a m. Mr Fogarty was found following the banks of the Manganuiohua stream.
