October 28 KAIAPOI VOLUNTEERS.—On Thursday afternoon last, Mr. James Craig of Kaiapoi. was riding in the neighborhood of the butt belonging to this company, and not noticing any danger signal, he incautiously passed close behind it, and a bullet passed close by his head. We hope this narrow escape will cause the company to be more cautious for the future, and to have a proper danger signal erected on t|je top of the butt.
LITERARY SOCIETY.—The usual weekly meeting of the society was held last evening, in the Mechanics’ Institute. The Rev. W. J. Habens occupied the chair. The question discussed was, “Is a protective tariff beneficial to a young colony?” The debate was altogether onesided, and on its being put by the Chair-man,-the whole of the members present voted in the negative.
