No Prize Yet For “Miss Wool”
With only three weeks to go to the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral show, members of the executive of the meat and wool section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers yesterday expressed concern that no prize was available for the winner of the “Miss Wool of Canterbury” eontest to be held at the show.
The vice-chairman (Mr A. F. Wright) explained that he had written to the Wool Board, which had suggested approaching the National Airways Corporation to sponsor a prize— such as a flight to
any point in the Dominion. This N.A.C. had declined to do, he said. The next letter to the Wool Board conveying this news produced a reply asking the executive to try S.P.A.N.Z., said Mr Wright No reply had been received from the airline. “We were advised by the board that if this failed we were to write to them again," he said.
Mr R. N. Bedford, the provincial president, expressed
disappointment that with three weeks to go no prize was available. “Where do we go if S.P.A.N.Z. lets us down?” he asked.
Mr Wright indicated that country grls were showing more interest in the “Miss
Wool” contest this year. Girls entering did a lot of work and if no prize was indicated it would be somewhat frustrating for them, he said. Mr Wright suggested a woollen outfit of some sort might be an appropriate prize. “What about approaching the Wool Board?” asked Mr Bedford. “Ever since these ‘Miss Wool’ competitions have been held there has been trouble over prizes.” Mr W. N. Dunlop, the chairman, said the original suggestion to hold such contests came from Mr Godfrey Bowen. That was why the matter should be referred back to the board.
Support for this course of action came from Mr T. F. H. Maxwell, who said it was a wool-promotion effort. “The board collects a fair amount of money from us to promote wool around the world. Surely they can do something at home.”
It was explained that the board had already granted £lOO towards the wool-handl-ing side of the exhibit for the show.
Because of this the executive decided that an approach be made to the provincial executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers with a view to its making a prize available, should this be necessary-
