EDUCATION DECISIONS
Action Urged By Chancellor
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Oct. 18.
The Chancellor of Auckland University, Sir Douglas Robb, said today he believed that neither New Zealand universities nor the Education Department have arrived at “clear decisions” in many fields of education. “But, if for no other reason, the high cost of education should cause us to make these decisions,” said Sir Douglas Robb, addressing the Institute of Surveyors. In education, many decisions were made “piece-meal” and without the applications of general principles, he said. “We have to decide what is best learnt by doing, and by formal full-time or part-time teaching. “Apprenticeship is still the best method for a great deal in all practical arts, including medicine and engineering, and we depart from it at our peril,” said Sir Douglas Robb.
