Applicants with School Certificate are preferred, but others with at least two years’ second ary education will be con sidered. Meat Inspection trainees are required to spend three months at a residential course as part of their training. In addition, on the job instruction is given and a qualifying examination is held at the end of two years. The minimum age for appointment is 16 years. Previous experience in a meat works is not necessary, but it could be of assistance on the job. Commencing salaries range from £547 p.a. (£lO 9s lOd per week) for 16-year-oids, £616 p.a. (£ll 16s 3d per week) for 17-years-olds and up to £BB5 p.a. (£l6 19s 5d per week accord ing to age. After the trainee passes the Meat Inspectors’ Examination there are regular increases up to £llOO (£2l Is lid per week) with excellent opportunity for promotion beyond this figure. Protective clothing and some equipment are provided free. Allowances are paid for laundering of clothing and for the purchase and maintenance of equip ment not provided. Financial assistance is avail able for a married man taking up appointment in a centre other than that in which he and his family are residing.
