Royalist’s Hull Springs Leak
(New Zealand Presi Association)
AUCKLAND, Oct. 19.
H.M.N.Z.S. Royalist would leave for Auckland from Singapore on Thursday with a leaking hull, it was reported in Auckland.
She is completing her last tour of Malaysian waters with the Far East fleet this week, and will be taken out of service
early next year. The Royalist is expected to be scrapped because of the condition <rf her hull. It is understood that the cruiser sprang a leak while on Malaysian patrol duty, and was patched in Hong Kong. The plate riveted to the 23-year-old hull has reduced the leak, but the ship is still taking in water.
There is no danger that the Royalist will not complete the Singapore-Auckland trip safely, provided the riveted plate holds. It is also reported that an oil leak in the ship damaged some equipment, but that the leak was repaired. The Royalist was originally scheduled to leave Singapore on October 21.
