SYDNEY. The British Open golf champion, Peter Thomson, arrived back in Sydney yesterday £lB,OOO richer from his efforts on the world circuit so far this year, but plagued by the worry that a muscle injury might deprive him of £25,000 in prize money next year.
Thomson injured a muscle in his side while playing in the Canada Cup tournament in Spain and had to withdraw from the final stages.
He now fears that the injury could prevent him from qualifying for the rich Carling tournament to be played next August. “Right now I am operating at only 90 per cent efficiency. I cannot drive at full power and I cannot practice,” he said. Regular Massage “I have been told to take it easy, but I can’t. I am having regular massage and heat
treatment instead. I have to enter the P.G.A. tournament in Melbourne next week to start qualifying for the Carling," he said.
Thomson won the British Open earlier this year and then finished third in the Carling tournament. To qualify for the tournament next year, Thomson will have to win a place in four of the big Australian tournaments three sponsored events and the national open. The P.G.A. championship is being played on the hilly Riversdale course, Melbourne, starting on October 21.
