A ROARING TRADE
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The Acting-Minister of Health (Mr Shelton) in Parliament today told Sir Basil Arthur (Opp., Timaru) not to listen to old wives’ tales. Sir Basil Arthur had asked what the Government would do if materials for undesirable drugs were being exported from New Zealand, in view of the seriousness with which it regarded the importation of such drugs.
Mr Shelton said that it was illegal to export dangerous drugs or narcotics without a licence. He said he could not comment on the export of materials which were neither dangerous drugs nor narcotics.
Sir Basil Arthur then asked if Mr Shelton knew of the export of deer antlers in velvet for use as aphrodisiacs in the East. Mr Shelton said he knew nothing about it.
Sir Basil Arthur said the export trade in deer antlers in velvet was worth £20,000 last year. Mr Shelton: The member should not listen to old wives’ tales. Sir Basil Arthur then asked Mr Shelton to give an assurance either that the Government was condoning the export of aphrodisiacs or that it was trading on the gullibility of people.
Mr Shelton did not reply.
