(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) today launched a £45.000 appeal for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme by announcing a £5OOO Golden Kiwi grant. He said that the board of control of the Golden Kiwi lottery had unanimously voted £5OOO for the appeal. Mr Holyoake named these private donors: J. R. McKenzie Trust £lOOO, Dunlop (N.Z.) Ltd„ £3OO, Sir John Hott £3OO Lady Hott £lOO, Mr J. B. Hott £lOO, J. Hott Advertising Ltd. £lOO, and Mr and Mrs P. Proctor £lOO.
Sir John Hott is chairman of the appeal. Mr Proctor is chairman of the award and deputy - chairman of the appeal.
Addressing an inaugural luncheon attended by about 120 persons, Mr Holyoake said New Zealanders, because they lived in an era of
abundance and leisure, had to direct the ebullience of their youth into worthwhile channels.
He was confident the appeal, which was directed mainly at business houses, would be over-filled.
Under the scheme, certificates and badges are awarded for self-reliance and discipline among young persons. The scheme began in Britain in 1956, and in New Zealand two years ago, Mr Holyoake said. It had been enthusiastically adopted by the Y.M.C.A and the Y.W.C.A., the Order of St John, scouts, guides. Army and Air Force cadets, the Boys’ Brigade, and by secondary schools and colleges.
Mr R. M. Grierson, of Auckland, was yesterday elected president of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors, succeeding Mr N. J. Gardiner, of Wellington.—(PA.)
