HOSTEL APPEAL

Statement By Chairman

Some teaching staff of the University of Canterbury withheld support from the halls of residence appeal because, they said, it had not been made clear that some students living in the new hostels at Ham would be expected to attend chapel services. One of the papers distributed during the appeal said: “Accommodation will be available to students without distinction of race, creed or nationality.”

The chairman of the appeal committee (Mr C. H. Perkins) made the following statement, which is believed to have been approved by all interested in this particular issue:— “In connexion with the combined churches appeal for halls of residence, some questions have been raised about attendance at the weekly chapel service at Christchurch College. s “While any person is free to join the college, the environment he enters is that of a church college. However, in view of statements made for the guidance of those assisting with the appeal and the history of the appeal to date, the authorities of Christchurch College have affirmed that the spirit and intention is that all students are expected to attend the weekly house service, except those who have grave intellectual difficulty or are of other faith.”
