Brilliant Sprint Run At Trentham
Home on the Range showed he was right in the top class as a sprinter when he won his second Wellington Racing Club Shorts Handicap in fast time on Saturday. His Imin 9jsec for six furlongs was an outstanding run for a spring meeting. A year ago Home on the Range won the race in Imin 14]sec on a rain-affected track. One of the best winners sired by Llanstephan, Home on the Range was well ridden by J. T. Anderson. Anderson kept the chestnut handy on the inside, brought him forward to join Trial Offer in the lead two furlongs out. and into a clear lead at the furlong. Mr B. J. Archer’s Feilding-
trained chestnut went to the post strongly for victory by a length and three-quarters. Without Home on the Range in the field it would have been a spectacular finish for first. The next five came to the post almost In perfect line. Scramble nosed out the top weight, Grand Win, for second, and it was a meritorious placing after an interrupted run in the straight. Prince Hagen, Rainfall, and the Wingatui-trained Castle Flight were also up in line in the spectacular tussle for the minor places. Trial Offer, Shiloko and Baraboo were close behind. The favourite, Shipmate, carried £4646 10s in win-and-place betting, and never heartened his backers. He was last to finish.
