LIME ON FIRE
18 Tons In Rail Waggon Eighteen tons of lime in a railway waggon outside the railway car shed in Mowbray street was destroyed by fire about 1.46 a.m. yesterday. Rain penetrated the cover over the truck and the water and lime set up a reaction which ignited the bags of lime. Units from the Central and Sydenham stations extinguished the blaze. A unit from the Sydenham station went to an oven fire at the home of Morris Breward. at 59 Tankerville road, at 9.6 a.m. yesterday. One unit from the St. Albans station went to a hedge fire at the home of Roger Tweedy, 23 Forfar street, at 1.17 p.m. on Saturday. A fire in Smart’s rubbish pit at Hornby was extinguished by a unit from the Sockburn station called at 4.15 p.m. ’ At 6.15 p.m. a unit from, the Lyttelton station was called to a chimney fire at the home of Mr M. Lester, 64 London street. Two units from the Woolston station went to a rubbish and grass fire at the home of James Inglis, 151 Mount Pleasant road, at 7.46 p in. An oven fire at the home of Driver Mokomoko, 644 Main South road, was put out by units from the Central and Sockburn stations called at 11.35 p.m.
