‘City Redevelopment Needs Bold Planning
Bold planning and hard thinking in city centre and housing redevelopment is necessary if Xew Zealand is to benefit from lessons in other countries, according to Mr P. G. Scoular, the Christchurch City Council engineer. who has returned after a comprehensive study tour of some major overseas cities. He said the standard of some countries were better than..previously, but fell far short of what should be New Zealand’s aim.
“Now is the time when we have got to be fairly bold in our planning and do some hard thinking. I have been a bit appalled by the ‘filing-
cabinet' housing of people in some overseas countries,” Mr Scoular said. “I think we may be aiming a bit high in the density of our redevelopment.” On traffic problems, Mr Scoular said New Zealand would have to find its own answers. “Here again we have sot to do some hard thinking. No firm policy can be applied (to any one city. Each has its I own particular problems,” he !said. i While overseas Mr Scoular ; studied pedestrian segregation from traffic, housing redeve- [ lopment, and other matters of (municipal interest. | During his eight-week tour, ! Mr Scoular visited San Francisco, Montreal, New York, I Philadelphia, London, Birj mingham, Coventry, Leicester. Bristol, Cardiff, Cumberland. Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Oslo, j Stockholm, Vienna and Sydney. He spent about two I days in most cities.
