Pay-Stoppage Dispute
The national council of the Tramway Workers’ Union would be approached for permission for the Canterbury Tramway W’orkers’ Union to hold a ballot for the calling of a partial stop-work meeting, the national president of the union and the Canterbury branch secretary (Mr L. C. J. Southon) said last evening. The union had decided at its annual meeting to call a stop-work meeting to protest against the stoppage of pay to a member, Mr Southon said. However, the union was still negotiating with the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) on the matter. It was sincerely hoped accord would be reached without a stop-work meeting, Mr Southon said, and he thought it would be reached.
