RAFFLE PERMITS

Nine A Day Last Year The Department of Internal Affairs reports a boom in the raffle business in the South Island. The district officer of the department, Mr C. J. Kite, said the growth of the population had led to an increase in the number of raffle permits issued. During the last 12 months, the department had issued nine licences a day for raffles. The rate was about eight a day for the previous year. The licences, for raffles exceeding £25, were issued mainly to charitable and sporting organisations throughout the South Island, excluding Nelson and Marlborough. Mr Kite said the licences permitted the applicants to sell tickets only in the area where the proceeds would be spent. Local organisations could conduct raffles not exceeding £250 in prizes. Provincial raffles were limited to £450 and national raffles to £750. Raffles with prizes of less than £25 were handled by the police.
