Federation With Australia

Sir, —Advocates of an Australasian federation do not necessarily feel that the smaller partner in the venture is the only one which has to do some adjusting, as implied by Mr Ross. There needs to be give and take on both sides. One of the major adjustments needed is in trade and commerce: the trade agreement makes a start. Political and social adjustment are also needed both before and during any such merger. Common heritage and defence are the main factors drawing us together. Collective and unified security offers more protection than weak neutrality. Switzerland’s position has seemingly succeeded, but it is a moot point whether Hitler would have respected it if his plans had not been thwarted by what transpired to be the collective security of the Allies. Might, not necessarily right, is what dictators understand. Together, Australia and New Zealand can be a nation not to be trifled with.— Yours, etc., AUSTRALASIAN. October 11, 1965.
