SCHOOLS’ TV

Unenthusiastic Approval Without any show of enthusiasm. the Linwood High School Board will support the proposed pilot scheme of school television programmes in Christchurch. Its representative will tell the Secondary Schools’ Council that most members doubt the value of the scheme but will not stand in the way of a trial. The headmaster (Mr P. A. Hickling) said he would not stand in the way of a pilot scheme “but I can’t see anything coming of this idea because this kind of teaching is so divorced from classroom practice.” Mr Hickling said the co-op-eration among schools in phasing lessons, timetables, and other things to the topic and level of each television broadcast would be enormous. "I don't think even radio: broadcasts to schools have justified themselves,” said Mrs: J. E. L. Pocock. The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said the pilot pro-: grammes suggested were ■ ‘■enriching” rather than pure teaching. "That raises another point,” said Mr Hickling. “Are they to be given in class hours or, being enrichment, in the lunch hour or after school?" i “How do we know how this will work out till we have! tried it?” asked Mr L. J. G.l Manson. “This is the whole ob-| ject of the scheme.” Several other members de-! dined to comment when in-! vited by the chairman (Pro-i lessor J. Vaughan). IT Is not a question of your ability to stand the cost of advertisement —but being able to survive without It. The thing one has to consider is not only an extension of your business, but of holding what you already have. Advertising not only does not increase the cost of "the advertised article, but. on the contrary, makes economies possible that benefit consumers.
