HISTORY OF 900 YEARS

“New” Bayeux Tapestry

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyriflht? LONDON.

Britain is to produce a modern counterpart to France’s famous Bayeux tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings in 1066 —when William, Duke of Normandy, carried out the last successful invasion of England. Hastings Town Council—on the south coast opposite France—has commissioned a panel of embroidered pictures showing the history of England since 1066, to mark next year’s 900th anniversary of the battle. This panel is just over 76j yards in length—slightly longer than the Bayeux tapestry. Starting where the Bayeux tapestry leaves off, the 81 pictures—nine for each century —will include incidents in the life of Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Lord Mayor of London, Black Death plague; and the Treaty of Versailles signed after First World War. The tapestry will be made by the Royal School of Needlework and seen by the public for the first time at the Ideal Home Exhibition in London next March.
