COMPETITION ESSAYS
Linwood Pupils Receive Prizes Non! King, aged 17, of Linwood High School, won first place in the Canterbury section of the Royal Commonwealth Society’s essay competition. Noni’s entry, with about 40 other entries in the Canterbury section, were then sent to London for judging. The entries included one from Brent Costley, aged 17, also of Linwood High School, which had competed unsuccessfully against Nona King’s entry in the Canterbury section. In London Brent’s entry was judged third over-all. Yesterday Nona King was presented with the A. E. Flower Memorial Challenge Cup by the president of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society (Mr L. C. C. Spooner). Linwood High School has won the cup five times in the last six years. Brent Costley received the Maragret Best memorial prize for his London placing, and books worth £4 4s.
