Art Colleges Teach Clothing Design
[By ZALtA THOMAS) There need be no fears for the future of Britain’s clothing industry if the high standard of design and workmanship continues to emerge from the various art colleges that have now entered the fashion field. The students from the Hornsey College of Art re-
eently showed designs which were colourful and imaginative and which brought applause from some of the top names in haute couture. The new diploma course at the college lasts for three years. During the first year students are engaged in weaving, printed textiles, fashion design and ancillary subjects such as millinery, embroidery, accessories and shoe design. As the course progresses they specialise further in the section to which they are best suited. Drawing studies, under the heading “visual research,” continue to be an important part throughout the courses, as do studies and lectures. Freed from the more general syllabus necessary for examination courses, post diploma students are able to take highly specialised training for prospective designers and teachers. The course is closely geared to the immediate requirements of industry and also offers facilities for additional and specialised research.
For those qualified in textiles, the course provides a close link with design requirements of the clothing industry. Experimentation is encouraged and generous facilities are available with special attention to textures, finishes, synthetics and plastics.
