NUCLEAR POWER
Reduction In Cost (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, October 11. The Atomic Energy Authority last year reached a turning point in its efforts to reduce the cost of nuclear power, says the annual report of the authority. This is the result of development of the advanced gas-cooled reactor. The gas-cooled nuclear power stations at present in use, the report says, are based cn the Calder Hall design, and the later stations would well match the generating costs of the coal-fired stations which will come into use at the same time. However the A.G.R. is expected to produce base-load power "significantly cheaper than that from conventional stations or alternative reactor systems.”
