BIGAMY CHARGE
Man Pleads Guilty (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 4. A young Wellington barman pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy today in the Magistrate’s Court. Richard McLean, aged 27, admitted that he married at Palmerston North in May, 1958, and had three children by this marriage before being legally separated in March, 1961. He came to Wellington, and in August, 1963, went through a vow of marriage with another girl who was three months pregnant. He stopped paying £7 10s maintenance to his wife in December, 1964. In April, 1965, he left his second “wife” and their child, and was not located till last day-Detective-Sergeant A. H. Hart outlined this sequence to Mr J. B. Thomson, S.M. McLean also pleaded guilty to a charge of car conversion. Detective - Sergeant Hart said McLean had become friendly with a barmaid on August 19, took her car from Aro street and drove to Palmerston North with it. There he abandoned it with engine trouble. The Magistrate remanded McLean to October 11 for a probation officer’s report.
