CRICKET DEPUTATION Sydenham Park, 'A Cow Paddock’
The Canterbury Cricket Association, concerned at the state of Sydenham Park, which one member described as “only a cow paddock at present,” will ask Air H. G. Gilpin, director of the Parks Reserves, to meet a deputation from the association.
Its management committee decided this course at its meeting last evening after hearing a report on the state of the ground from Mr A. G. Williams, a member of the committee and of the Sydenham club, and Mr A. G. Duckmanton, convener of the C.C.A.’s grounds subcommittee.
Mr Williams said the outfield of the park affected three of the pitches—including the No. 1 pitch—and they could not be used for at least the first round. Mr Duckmanton thought it would be probably two rounds before the ground could be used.
Both said the park had been used by the Canterbury Rugby : Union on the worst two playing Saturdays of the winter. Mr Williams added: “It. could apparently be snowing but they’ll play Rugby.” “We have cause to ask the City Council to put the ground in order,” said Mr F. F. Dawson. The deputation will consist of two representatives of the C.C.A. and two from the Sydenham chib. Labour Day.—The question of Labour Day play for teams which normally play one-day games was deferred to the next meeting. A recommendation that third grade B and fourth grade games not be played on Labour Day was narrowly defeated. Senior Grade.—lf the senior
competition is split—it is to be reviewed at a special meeting—the divisions will be known as first grade A and first grade B. If there is a tie for fourth place, the position in the upper grade will be decided on the average runs per wickets, for and against. Local Rules.—The meeting approved local rules bringing the no ball (cutting the popping crease) rule up to date, and extending the limitation of on-side fieldsman to all grades, not just senior. Dates.—The dates for the first seven rounds are: October 9 and 16, and 23 and 25, and on successive Saturdays to December 18. The seventh round will be on | January 15 and 22.
