EYRE WELL TREES

Salvage Until December

It is hoped that the salvage of wind-blown trees from the Eyrewell State Forest will continue until the end of December if the fallen trees remain sound.

The Christchurch City Council was advised on Monday evening that the New Zealand Forest Service realised that some inconvenience was being caused in some cases by the unpredictable time in which the fallen trees would deteriorate beyond economic limits. Anyone concerned should be relieved of any obligation to draw supplies from Eyrewell after the end of December.

If the same co-operation that had been shown in the past could be maintained for the next few months, together with the continued log export to Japan until the end of next March, the main bulk of the wind-blown material would be removed, the service said.

The City Council agreed to stop felling in its plantations while the Eyrewell timber was salvaged, but decided last evening that it wanted the agreement to end in December or earlier if sound logs were not available at Eyrewell.
