Donors And Collectors Sought In Halls Appeal

The combined appeal for the Churches’ halls of residence at Ham was one which should be of concern to all women, especially those in country areas, because it was for young people living outside Christchurch for whom these halls were planned, the Dominion president of the National Council of Women, Mrs W. Grant said at a meeting of the Christchurch branch, last evening.

“This appeal should be the especial concern of N.C.W. members because you supported the remit asking for an increased subsidy in the ratio of four to one for churches and other organisations building halls of residence for university students; the subsidy to cover fourfifths of approved buildings,” said Mrs Grant.

“This remit was passed at the national executive meet-

ing last April and has been acted on by the Government.” The combined appeal— Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, and Roman Catholic —was a tremendous step forward and was an example of real community co-opera-tion which deserved the support of all. All monies would be paid into a pool, said Mrs Grant. Mrs Grant said the campaign headquarters wanted the names of people, especially those in country areas,

who would be likely to make donations. Names could be given to Mrs Grant or sent to the campaign headquarters at 34 Gloucester street, P.O. Box 2639, telephone 40-294. In addition, headquarters needed the names of suitable volunteers who would call on these people for their donations. The volunteers would be given a short course as to the best method of approaching people. “The need for volunteers is urgent,” said Mrs Grant.
